user Debbie Brombacher/Precision Plant Care - Recent study says plants cause 10-30% of the atmospheres methane ? 1/11/2006; 11:51:53 PM

Has anyone read the news about the recent study by the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany? They are saying that plants (living) create 10-30% of the atmospheres methane.

Anyone have a take on this ?

Where’s Clem when ya need him.

Debbie

Oh my God! They are out to kill us!!!
If after so many millenia they haven’t killed us yet, I wouldn’t worry too much about the pothos in my kitchen. Although, I sense it watching me sometimes...water me now!

I couldn’t resist...hehehe...

I am going to go hunt down that study and give it a read. Sounds interesting. On a similar note, my sister in law in Jordan told me once that she doesn’t keep plants inside because they can suffocate you. I just about had a fit. I told her that if that were the case, I would be a ghost then due to all the plants in my house. She was taught this in school! I heard this vein of thinking from our old vice president, Danny-boy Quail.

No wonder we have so much trouble trying to reason with people in the Third World...the Flat Earth Society probably still has a branch office in Jordan.

Well, all that methane falls under the "good news/bad news" heading: the good news is, it’s "all-natural" and could conceivably be captured and burned as a fuel. The bad news is that one day, somebody in Jordan is going to light up a big Cuban cigar and blow us all to kingdom come.

This should make the cows happy, though...all these years, they’ve been getting all the bad press for polluting the atmosphere with their gaseous emissions. Turns out it was the plants all along.

Wow, Debbie. They aren’t joking. Living plants. And not just those plants that are able to metabolize in anaerobic conditions- ALL plants. I’m absolutely shocked. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. The link is pasted above for anyone else interested to take a peak.

THAT’S why we can’t buy Cuban cigars here !!!! Our government knew it all the time !!! I KNEW it was a conspiracy !!!!

As far as the third world thing ........ I don’t sell plants there so ... whatEVAH !!!! HAHA Though, that could be the real reason the Patels won’t buy plants for their hotels here (they own virtually ALL the Holiday Inns in my area) ......... and to think, I believed them when they said it was because I am a woman and that they would buy them if I sent my husband in (TRUE). I got thrown out when I said, "I feel sorry for your Mother that she raised an ignorant wretch like you." (I have a tad bit o’temper)

Thanks Lynnae, I was going to offer to email that article to anyone interested. Clem, it’s in your email box.

(Anaerobic bacterial decomposition of plant and animal matter, such as occurs under water, produces marsh gas, which is also methane.)

Looks like it has to do with plants in a "natural" environment not the interiorscape and since it’s plants decomposing if we get rid of all the plants that produce O2 then we also get rid of a source of the methane, right?

I guess the biosphere isn’t as easy to figure as some folks thought, eh?

Biosphere? I’m still figuring out Reagonomics, the global warming thing as well as the global economy and even the etch-a-sketch,but my Lyrope are blooming.
